Osteoporosis Prevention

Osteoporosis is the slow, progressive loss of bone mass threatening 44 million Americans (80% of those affected are women), which occurs without symptoms or pain until a person's bone starts to break, typically in the hip, spine or wrist.

For stronger, healthier bones, follow these simple prevention strategies:
  • Consume enough calcium, 1,000 to 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily, through foods or supplements.
  • Don't skip the Vitamin D - 400 to 800 IUs  (Some calcium supplements include Vitamin D right in it).
  • Do weight-bearing exercises like walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing or weightlifting on a regular basis. Don't forget to check out Body Togs and the Walkvest on my website.
  • Eat a healthy, well balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, fiber & low fat dairy products.
  • Quit smoking! Smoking is a leading risk factor for osteoporosis as well as heart disease, lung cancer and many other life-threatening conditions.
  • Limit your alcohol intake to no more than 1 or 2 drinks per day.
  • Get screened. Bone density screening is fast and painless.  If it is found that you have significant bone loss, medications are available and highly effective in reducing the risk of fracture.

    Eat Your Cruciferous Vegetables

A 2004 report by nutritional scientist Keith Singletary of the University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign revealed phyto-nutrients in vegetables help prevent mutations that turn normal cells cancerous. Sulforaphane, a chemical in broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables was added to cultures of human breast cancer cells. The result showed the cancer cells stopped dividing within hours. Sulforaphane seems to work by interrupting the tiny micro-tubules that normally pull pairs of chromosomes apart when cells divide. Without the tubules, malignant cells can’t multiply. Normal cells seemed to remain untouched by the sulforaphane.

Eat more fruit and veggies! They should be the foundation of your healthy diet.

    Thinking Patterns Toward Weight Loss

Being trim and healthy feels better than any food tastes.  You may not believe this statement if you have never been there, but we who have can testify to this truth.  Compare the two before you stray from healthy eating and exercise time.

Keep upmost in your mind a vision of achieving your goals.  Let that be the impetus that carries you through.  Do you have a picture of your goal?  If not, find one and place it in prominent places like the refrigerator door, workplace or mirror.

We have the most advanced brains in existence and can do almost anything we set our minds too!  If the brain can be trained to believe it is right to kill innocent people in God's name, it can certainly be molded to control our eating and behaviors toward weight loss and good health!.....Linda Hibbard
